DokuWiki staat toe om naar externe URLs te verwijzen, maar alleen voor bekende protocollen. Welke protocollen toegestaan zijn is ingesteld in conf/scheme.conf of conf/scheme.local.conf.

De volgende protocollen worden standaard ondersteund:

• http
• https
• telnet
• gopher
• wais
• ftp
• ed2k
• irc
• ldap

Om lokale links toe te staan moet je file toevoegen aan conf/scheme.local.conf (sinds Rincewind, 2011.05+), hetzelfde geld voor andere protocollen.
